Consumers Try on Sexier Styles for a Post-Pandemic Summer

Recent reports by dating-app companies have indicated singles are ready to mingle this summer. Now it seems they are really baring it all.

New data from Rent the Runway shows consumers of all ages are reaching for what the fashion company calls “the sexiest styles we’ve ever seen,” heavily featuring “crops, minis and cutouts.”

These wardrobe choices come despite the fact that a large percentage of Americans say they have put on a few pounds lately. According to a recent survey from the American Psychological Association, 42% of U.S. adults reported experiencing undesired weight gain since the start of the pandemic, putting on an average of 29 pounds.

Meanwhile, Rent the Runway reports utilization for pieces with cutouts is up 44% this year. Two years ago, top brands on its site were described as “work ready, expected and conservative”; this year, they are “liberated” and “optimistic.”

Age isn’t a deterrent, nor is the weather, apparently. The company said women 35 and over are reaching for crop tops three times as much as they were in 2019. It also reported around 200 shipments for a particular mini dress in the New York metro area in February and March, when the average temperature was a frigid 39 degrees Fahrenheit.

Looks like those well-worn sweatpants will finally get a break.
